Welcome Statement:
The Department of Neuropsychiatry welcomes you to the Master of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. As a department we are committed to medical student education and continuously strive to improve your educational experience.
This handbook presents information guide and logbook activity of this degree administered by the Neuropsychiatry department, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University.
Mission Statement:
The Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University graduates trained physicians, with competitive skills at both national and regional levels, who are capable of teaching, learning and life long training, and are committed to the medical service standards and professional ethics. The faculty supports the overall continuous development of programs and courses and scientific research with emphasis on the expansion of applied scientific research and health care programs to serve needs of community and enhancement of environmental development.
The mission of this degree is to provide the candidates with an excellent learning experience of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and to provide them with training in both theoretical and clinical skills essential to the practice of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Thus, qualify the candidate to be capable of providing the optimum health care service to the society and improving the scientific research. Ain Shams University awards the degree of Master of Science in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry as a postgraduate academic specialty training degree for physicians who have completed at least a Master of Science degree in neuropsychiatry as a prerequisite to formal certification in child and adolescent psychiatry. The Master degree comprises taught courses, a research essay or thesis and a final exam qualifying for registration as a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in the Egyptian Child and adolescent psychiatric association and for registration as a specialist in the Egyptian Medical Syndicate.

Program aims:
- Understanding the pathophysiology of the different childhood psychiatric disorders and the associated psychopathological background.
- Development of the necessary knowledge and skills to approach and manage the wide array of childhood psychiatric disorders.
- Analyze patients’ presentations in developmental and systemic terms and acquire skills necessary to differentiate between distress, disturbance and disorder to differentiate between developmental disorders and simple delays.
- Effectively perform a detailed and an efficient history taking and examination of children and adolescents and conduct family interviews.
- Understanding the appropriate use and interpretation of the common psychometric tools and structured diagnostic interviews.
- Acquiring the skills for competently interpreting the basic neuropsychological reports and draw solid recommendations.
- Ability to carry out the diagnosis and plan the treatment of the commonly encountered childhood psychiatric diseases and emergencies in a compassionate, appropriate and effective manner.
- Understand and conduct the basic psychotherapy sessions for children, adolescents and their families.
- Ability to acquire decision making skills for using different therapeutic modalities, psychoactive medications and environmental manipulations of children and adolescents and their families.
- Effectively work within a multidisciplinary team and implement liaison with members of the other medical specialties.
- Capacity to learn independently and to use the medical literature to improve the clinical practice.
